Interview with Cécile

Cécile is a 25 year-old French photographer. She started shooting film with a Lomo camera over 2 years ago but since more than one year she has shot with a variety of different film cameras.

Cécile, also known as La fille renne on Flickr, who had been featured on Shooting Film would like to share more of her work with us in an interview.

- Hi Cécile, can you tell us more about you?
Hi! I'm Cécile, a 25 year-old photographer from France. In my daily life I study animal bones, but I have really got into film photography since two years. I also like making jewelry and plush for my little e-shop, biology, ink, Russian teas, spending time with my family and my fluffy monsters.

- When did you first pick up a camera? Do you have a favorite camera to use?
My father offered me my first camera when I was 10 years old. It was a little point and shoot Olympus. Now my favorite camera is definitively my Canon AE-1 Program, given by my better half one year ago. This camera follows me everywhere and always gives me the results I expect. I currently also use a Zenit 11 of my parents and my new Polaroid Automatic 330 Land camera. I have now a small collection of cameras and I like switching between them, it depends on the occasions.

- Do you have any formal training in photography?
Not at all. I first learned some tips with my father and now with great photographers I meet.

- Talk to us about your background in photography?
I was trained up many things with digital cameras last seven years, but with film cameras that I really have the results I want. I photograph a lot of subjects, mainly life and the good moments. I like to try tons of old cameras, films, and experimentation (film swap, very old expired films, cross processing, double exposure …). I also like shooting with models (particularly alternative models) for spontaneous portraits and nudes. I like to transmit emotions to people.

- Do you have any ongoing projects with film photography?
Right now, I have swap film projects with people in other countries.  I have also recently created two big reviews on my blog : one about film photography and one about instant film photography. Those are two guides where I share my experience about all the cameras and films I have tested. I regularly increase them with my new tests (sorry, it’s only in French for the moment).
For the future, I would like to test medium format and film soup. I also have a book project with my best friend Caroline about our analogue photographs.

- Any message for other film photographers? Or maybe a tip you would like to share?
Don’t hesitate to try film photography, to be creative and to experiment. It’s important to always have one camera with you, because we don’t know when a good opportunity can arise.

Cécile, thank you for the interview!
