Combat the Cat with Cameras, circa 1945

Images are from the collection of William H. T. Swisher, a combat photographer. During World War II Swisher participated in actions on Guam (July-August 1944), Okinawa (April-June 1945), and the post-war occupation of China.

Swisher enlisted in 1927 and served six periods of enlistment until his untimely death in a plane crash in 1946. During his time in the Marine Corps, Swisher served as a still photographer, process cameraman, photo clerk, and projectionist operator-repairman. Along with photographs of Swisher are images of one of the mascots, "Combat" the cat.
