"Passengers" by John Schabel

"Passengers" is a photo series featuring photographs taken by New York-based photographer John Schabel back in the mid-90s, between 1994 and 1996.

He staked out several airports and snapped away with a Nikon 35 mm film camera and a 500 mm reflex lens with a 2x teleconverter, giving him 1,000 mm of zoom. Schabel’s pictures were taken in a world before the tightened security of a post 9/11 world. He says he was occasionally asked to leave, but usually had free reign as long as he was in a public space outside the airport. Speaking to Wired, Schabel said: "It was a different time and there was not the same kind of suspicion of cameras… There wasn't such a sensitively about the airport."

A collection of selected photos from Schabel's Passengers are currently available in a book of the same name through Twin Palms Publishers.
